As for her mental health, our sources say Britney is "completely dysfunctional." Since the conservatorship ended, she has no supervision and, according to sources, has radical mood swings that we're told are "shocking."

We're told the few people who remain in Britney's life say she was doing much better when she was under a conservatorship. As one source said, "She had lots of freedom in the conservatorship and the restrictions were there to protect her. She's not protected anymore."

Our Britney sources are angry at what's happened since the conservatorship ended, saying she's gotten absolutely "no justice" ... and that involves her finances.

We're told Britney has been spending a fortune and is in real danger of going broke. Our sources say she's been going to French Polynesia, staying at The Brando, and spending close to a million dollars each trip between private jets, hotels, staff, etc. She goes every month or 2. We're told she also goes to Hawaii almost monthly by herself, taking a private jet, staying in the Presidential Suite at the Four Seasons, and dropping $350k a trip.

"She cannot afford this. She had $60 million when the conservatorship ended, and she's now where the conservatorship started -- in danger of going broke" ... one source said.

Peiner Allgemeine Zeitung (PAZ) reports that the players will collectively come out on May 17 – the International Day Against Homophobia – as part of an initiative in Germany aimed at encouraging players and people working in football to come out.

The initiative has been set up by Marcus Urban, a former pro footballer who is gay.

Video of a drag queen in Massachusetts leading a group of young kids to chant “Free Palestine” has sparked fierce backlash — with some calling it “indoctrination” that is “wrong on every level.”

The encounter, which unfolded at a “Queer Storytime for Palestine” event organized by the Valley Families for Palestine group in Amherst last week, had gone viral by Thursday as outrage mounted.

“Today what we’re going to do is shout ‘Free Palestine.’ Can I hear that?” the drag queen, known as “Lil Miss Hot Mess,” was filmed telling the children in the 30-second clip.

“If you’re a drag queen and you know it, and you really want to show it, if you’re a drag queen and you know it, shout ‘Free Palestine.'”

The kids could be heard mimicking the drag queen by repeatedly chanting, “Free Palestine.”

Furious critics were quick to point out the hypocrisy of a drag queen touting the phrase given the harsh treatment of LGBTQ people in Gaza.

“The harsh reality? Members of the LGBTQ+ community are often murdered in Gaza and other Palestinian areas such as Ramallah,” Stop Antisemitism tweeted alongside the recording.

“Often times members of the LGBTQ+ community seek refuge in Israel as their lives are endangered and their families excommunicate them. Were these children taught these points?”

Others, too, piled on.

“An indoctrination double whammy: ‘Free Palestine’ meets ‘drag queen story hour,'” Eitan Fischberger, a former Israel Defense Forces sergeant, tweeted.

“If people can’t see that drag queens teaching kids to chant ‘Free Palestine’ is wrong on every level, then they seriously are part of the problem,” British TV host and politician Nigel Farage raged in a post on X.

Meanwhile, Jake Wallis Simons, the editor of the Jewish Chronicle, quipped: “Seriously. Yahya Sinwar, Putin, Xi and the Ayatollah are laughing so hard (and sharpening their knives).”

“Drag Queen Story Hour somehow just got worse,” the Citizen Free Press declared.

The organizers of the event had earlier shared a slew of photos on an Instagram account of the young children and their parents watching and smiling as the drag queen performed for them.

The group also boasted of the “important lessons” the kids learned during the storytime event.

“We came together today in joy and solidarity and learned some important lessons about being ourselves, using our voices to speak out against injustice, and being fabulous while we do it,” a caption on the post read.

Valley Families for Palestine and the drag queen didn’t immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment about the backlash.

William Remington Moses was born on November 17, 1959 in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of Marian McCargo, an actress and tennis star, and Richard Cantrell Moses, an advertising executive. His parents divorced when he was just a toddler. His mother would go on to get remarried to Republican Congressman Alphonzo E. Bell Jr. in 1970. Congressman Bell adopted William and his two brothers so they were legally his own children too.

He was a star athlete in school and after high school he attended Wesleyan University briefly before dropping out after meeting an agent who convinced Moses to have a change of heart. Moses never had any interest in acting until meeting the agent. Moses was almost immediately cast in a Sprite commercial. After that he was cast in his first film, Choices (also Demi Moore’s first film). Shortly after making Choices, he would land a role that would change his life and be his big break, Falcon Crest. He was asked to read for the role of “Cole Gioberti” and won the role, a role he would play for 6 seasons before leaving.

In 1988 he co-starred with Julia Roberts in Mystic Pizza and then in 1989 he began a string of Perry Mason TV movies series. He would make 17 Perry Mason TV movies from 1989 to 1993 playing an attorney who worked with the title character. After the death of Raymond Burr he would continue to play his character in 4 more tv movies, in 1994 and 1995. In 1992 he would have a recurring role on Melrose Place for 11 episodes. In 1997 he starred in the series Fame L.A., which got canceled fast. He also continued doing guest roles throughout the 90s and 00s in numerous shows, like Touched by an Angel, JAG, LA Doctors, Ally McBeal, Crossing Jordan, Seventh Heaven, NCIS, Cold Case, Tru Calling, CSI: Miami, Bones, Ghost Whisperer, Without a Trace, Castle, Big Love and numerous others.

He had numerous other roles in some small films and tv movies, and from 2005-2008 he starred in nine of the Jane Doe series of TV films as Jack Davis. In November 2022 he joined the cast of General Hospital as Jeff Webber.

While starring on “Falcon Crest” he would also do numerous guest appearances on other shows, such as Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Hotel, and Battle of the Network Stars, with the latter being where he met Tracy Nelson (daughter of Ricky Nelson and Kristin Harmon) and would begin dating. They married in 1987 and divorced in 1997. They had two daughters together. In 2000 he remarried.

Work began on Bad Girls in December 1978, with the singer teaming up with Moroder and Bellotte once more. The sessions, which spanned four months, were prolific. Instead of following the usual album-making approach of writing, demoing, and then recording a final version, the team would come up with ideas for melodies and hooks, flesh them out into full songs and then hit the booth immediately to record them.

“As soon as I was done with the mix of one song, we went right in and recorded,” Moroder explained in the liner notes of Bad Girls’ deluxe reissue in 2003. “While I was recording Donna… Pete would be recording a basic track for another song. Hi Jake,

My 20-year-old recently came out to me as homosexual. I had a feeling something was going on because he was hiding a lot from me, and I also found some “evidence” on his computer (including your website). In some ways, I’m relieved, because I knew something was off between us.

That said, I was raised in a family where homosexuality is highly discouraged. We are church people, and it’s challenging for me to divorce myself from that way of thinking. I’m trying my best, and learning from my son in the process. He tells me that he’s always felt this way, and that being gay is not his choice. While I’m still wrapping my head around it, I’m getting there.

One issue I struggle most with, however, is that it’s hard to imagine him having sexual relations with another man if he’s the submissive partner. I realize I might be overstepping, but it would help me come to terms with his new identity if at least I knew he was the masculine, dominant one. I don’t like thinking about him in another way.

Is it okay to tell my son that I accept him being gay, as long as he isn’t the passive one in the bedroom? I think that would make it easier for me to come to terms with all this.

By taking Cricket on a pheasant hunt with older dogs, Noem says, she hoped to calm the young dog down and begin to teach her how to behave. Unfortunately, Cricket ruined the hunt, going “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life”.

Noem describes calling Cricket, then using an electronic collar to attempt to bring her under control. Nothing worked. Then, on the way home after the hunt, as Noem stopped to talk to a local family, Cricket escaped Noem’s truck and attacked the family’s chickens, “grabb[ing] one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another”

When Noem finally grabbed Cricket, she says, the dog “whipped around to bite me”. Then, as the chickens’ owner wept, Noem repeatedly apologised, wrote the shocked family a check “for the price they asked, and helped them dispose of the carcasses littering the scene of the crime”.

Through it all, Noem says, Cricket was “the picture of pure joy”.

“I hated that dog,” Noem writes, adding that Cricket had proved herself “untrainable”, “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with” and “less than worthless … as a hunting dog”.

“At that moment,” Noem says, “I realised I had to put her down.”

Noem, who also represented her state in Congress for eight years, got her gun, then led Cricket to a gravel pit.

“It was not a pleasant job,” she writes, “but it had to be done. And after it was over, I realised another unpleasant job needed to be done.”

Incredibly, Noem’s tale of slaughter is not finished.

Her family, she writes, also owned a male goat that was “nasty and mean”, because it had not been castrated. Furthermore, the goat smelled “disgusting, musky, rancid” and “loved to chase” Noem’s children, knocking them down and ruining their clothes

Noem decided to kill the unnamed goat the same way she had just killed Cricket the dog. But though she “dragged him to a gravel pit”, the goat jumped as she shot and therefore survived the wound. Noem says she went back to her truck, retrieved another shell, then “hurried back to the gravel pit and put him down”.

At that point, Noem writes, she realised a construction crew had watched her kill both animals. The startled workers swiftly got back to work, she writes, only for a school bus to arrive and drop off Noem’s children.

“Kennedy looked around confused,” Noem writes of her daughter, who asked: “Hey, where’s Cricket?”

The NHS is to declare that sex is a matter of biology in a landmark shift against gender ideology.

Changes to the health service’s written constitution proposed by ministers will for the first time ban trans women from women-only wards, and give women the right to request a female doctor for intimate care.

The NHS constitution, a document that aims to set out the principles and values of the health service and legal rights for patients and staff, was last updated in 2015. It has to be updated at least every 10 years by the Secretary of State.

Campaigners for women’s rights welcomed the significant shift, which comes after years of wrangling and follows accusations that the health service had been captured by “gender ideology”.

In 2021, NHS guidance said trans patients could be placed in single-sex wards based on the gender with which they identified.

The new constitution will state: “We are defining sex as biological sex.”

The clarification means that the right to a single-sex ward means patients would “not have to share sleeping accommodation with patients of the opposite biological sex”.

Until now, no commitment was made to biological sex, meaning some female patients complained that they were forced to share sleeping space with trans women – those who are born male but identify as female.

This was so much beloved when it came out, and made a star out of Laura Linney. Yet there was tons of drama backstage, and I never got the full story behind all of it.

Marcus d'Amico was the original Mouse Tolliver, and he brought enormous charm to the part (which the Canadian actor who succeeded him in the sequel did not, although that actor, Paul Hopkins, was objectively better looking). But he pissed off Armistead Maupin for reasons I never fully understood--was d'Amico not forthcoming about his sexuality--and I never understood what went on there.

Also, Chloe Webb was absolutely excellent as Mona Ramsey ("Crotch, crotch, crotch, crotch!") but she was also replaced for the sequel by the uncharismastic Nina Siemaszko. Why?

I've been listening to Ike Eisenmann's podcast — he was the kid in nearly every Disney movie of the 1970s — and he interviews a lot of former child stars, who are interesting.

I have a relative who is usually very stoic and easy going. Rarely shows emotion, happy or sad, but is neutral most of the time.

However, he once told me about a ghostly encounter he had in his early twenties. He was riding his bike along an isolated stretch of countryside. It was a bright, sunny day and there was nobody else around, and no cars. As he continued down the road, he noticed a person in front of a billboard, hunched over like they were doing something in the grass. When this person saw my relative approaching, he stopped whatever he was doing in the grass, hide behind the billboard for a moment, then came back out and stuck his thumb out like he was trying to catch a drive.

My relative found this weird because he was on a bike, not a car, so it's not like he could offer the guy a drive. As my relative rode closer, he noticed how strange-looking the man near the billboard was. He said his neck was way too long, his face was small and the lower face was smooth with no mouth or jaw. The eyes were huge, and he was wearing a cap or beret. No nose, just nostril holes. He was really tall and had very long arms. My relative said the moment he saw this guy, he was overwhelmed with a surge of primal fear, like he was looking at an uncanny valley creation.

He rode away as fast as he could, and looked over his shoulder to see the guy staring at him in the distance, now with his arms behind his back. My relative got genuinely teary-eyed telling me this story, and looked very uneasy. I'm usually a skeptic, but whatever he saw must have been real to him.

My neighbor drowned last month on a fishing trip. He was in his mid-50s and worked in a factory.

His family (wife and five kids) have been posting non-stop on social media about how much they miss and love him, sharing photos of them all together when they were little at various events like birthdays and christmas. My point is, despite all the drama and brawling when he was alive, everybody seemed genuinely devastated when he died and were sobbing like crazy at the funeral. They still look very shaken up and depressed a month after his death.

The reason it makes me sad is because even though I never wanted marriage/kids, it's depressing to know when I die nobody will grieve for me like my neighbor's family grieve for him. Despite all the crap he put them through, they love him and miss him because he's family.

My darling friends Irena and Red gave me the most magical intimate tea/luncheon with my dearest and closest friends and family. Some of my oldest girlfriends look so young and of course, the youngest, my five year old granddaughter who was able to write me her own card this year!

As per the previous thread, I am still listening to Moby Dick, but not during chemotherapy, there are too many interruptions and I am enjoying the story far too much for stopping and starting. So it’s on my commute.

I wanted a big, easy to read saga to read over the holidays so I am rereading Gone With The Wind for the first time since childhood. Scarlett has less of Vivien Leigh’s devious intelligence, and Melanie isn’t a beatific and sickly sweet as per Olivia de Havilland but guileless, plucky and almost immature. Reading now, they are very much sheltered teenagers.

I read the CWA Gold Dagger winner every year so The Kingdoms of Savannah by George Dawes Green is on my list.

The Channel 4 doc, titled 'Spacey Unmasked,' will feature interviews with several men about their experiences with the actor.

Max and ID have acquired U.S. rights to a Channel 4 documentary about Kevin Spacey.

The two-part doc, titled Spacey Unmasked, is billed as a “forensic look” at Spacey’s career and the allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct against him. Spacey was acquitted in July 2023 of nine charges in a U.K. criminal case against him.

The documentary will also include interviews with “multiple men unconnected to that case about their experiences with Kevin Spacey, almost all of whom have never spoken before,” along with other previously unseen archival footage and interviews with the actor.

Spacey, a two-time Oscar winner, faced nine criminal charges from four different men in his U.K. trial, ranging from unwanted touching to, according to testimony from one man, performing oral sex on the man while he was asleep. The charges stemmed from alleged acts that occurred from 2001 to 2013; Spacey was artistic director of London’s Old Vic Theatre from 2004-15.

Spacey Unmasked is set to air on Channel 4 in the U.K. on May 6 and 7. Premiere dates for the U.S. and other territories haven’t been announced yet. All3Media International is handling international sales of the documentary and struck a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery for rights to the United States (where it will stream on Max and air on ID’s cable channel) and several other countries.

Henry Edward Garcia (Hank Cheyne) was born on August 13, 1958 in Santa Maria, California. He is of German and Dutch descent on his mothers side and Native American, Spanish and Mexican descent on his fathers side. He was raised in a Roman Catholic household and went to a parochial middle school and high school. After high school he went to Santa Clara University where he played Varsity baseball and graduated with a BSC in Business. After that he attended UCLA Law School where he received his Juris Doctor degree.

While in Law School he was approached by photographer Steven Arnold, who took notice of the handsome young man and asked to photograph him. He agreed. After this a friend of his recommended he get into acting because of his good looks and presence, and recommended him to an acting coach. He began taking acting lessons and the coach, Vincent Chase, told him he should go to an open casting for a big feature editorial in GQ Magazine. Hank went and the photographer doing the casting was Bruce Weber, who cast Hank almost immediately (photo taken can be seen below). Weber took such a liking to him and his striking beauty that he continued working with him, featuring Hank in magazines such as British Vogue, Italian Vogue, in an editorial in Las Vegas with Christie Brinkley, and for a major Gianni Versace campaign. After Weber he went on to shoot with acclaimed photographers Herb Ritts, Mathew Rolston, and Fabrizio Gianni among others.

He juggled being a model while also attending Law School for a few years before graduating and passing the California Bar Exam. He almost immediately was offered a full time offer from a Beverly Hills law firm. Before committing and needing a break from seven straight years of college and grad school, he asked for and received a deferment with an open offer to return to practice law. Following commercial and print work he moved to Europe, traveling extensively, eventually living in Italy and then later Tokyo, Japan, before returning to the U.S. where he committed to pursuing a career as an actor after being discovered by another acting coach while living in Milan.

In 1986 he was cast in Another World as Scott Love/Lasalle in NYC. However, when his two year contract was over he decided against renewing it as he wants to move back to California. After moving back to California he did small parts in B flicks, tv commercials and guest spots on some shows, and continued this for years.

1996 he co-founded a theater company on Hollywood Theater Row and starred in the world premiere of Steve Monroe's 'A Kind Man and A Good Lover' in the role of Frank Mackie, for which he received a Los Angeles Ovation Award Nomination. That same year Aaron Spelling met him and cast him as Detective Ricardo Torres on Sunset Beach, which would premiere in 1997. The soap ran for 3 years but was a cult hit in the UK and big hit in places like Russia and Poland.

In the early 00s he gained a passion for art and began painting, even getting a studio space in LA to do so, and Gallery representation on Melrose Ave.

In 2006 he returned to acting in a show called “Saints & Sinners”, which ran for 62 episodes. In 2009/2010 he had a recurring role as Austin Buttercup in HBO’s Big Love. After that he had big guest starring roles on Sons of Anarchy and Criminal Minds. In 2014 he was cast in a recurring role for Longmire and cast in an episode of The Morning Show in 2019.

WASHINGTON — Amid growing protests on college campuses by pro-Palestinian demonstrators, the White House is planning for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to have a minimal presence for a traditional rite of spring: delivering commencement addresses.

Biden is scheduled to speak at Morehouse College and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in May, while Harris is only slated to give a graduation speech at the Air Force Academy. You ever have interactions with random people that get weird? I met a guy for work the other day and he started getting paranoid, freaking out and saying I had “ulterior motives” for asking some basic business questions and became very abrupt and ended the lunch. He’s a successful and seemingly a sane person. He acted legitimately freaked out. About once or twice a year I meet someone who I rub the wrong way and I seem to turn them into a schizophrenic. It’s really bizarre.

Shiv, I mean Shari, has been unable to save Waystar, I mean National Amusements. It will be probably be sold to Skydance, who will do… something with it. No one knows. In all likelihood, the TV business (CBS, one iconic and now useless MTV Networks) will be spun off to be sold for scrap. Paramount Plus will shut down. Paramount Pictures, which was burnt to the ground by Brad Grey, does not have significant IP to make it a lucrative acquisition. It could be whittled down to barebones (Netflix would like a nice lot) and simply exist as a dealer of content to other companies.

OR… Can anyone remember a time when six large companies dominated a single industry, and then something really BAD happened which made them lose a lot of money, and everybody panicked, so then the six companies all paired off and became three really large companies that are still around today?

Four men have been arrested after one of the accused’s phones was discovered to contain a video of them gang-raping a Bengal monitor lizard at the Sahydari Tiger Reserve in Maharashthra, India.

CCTV footage from the Maharashtra Forest Department showed the four men lurking around the forest and trespassing into the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, which was created by the Indian government in 2008 to conserve Bengal tigers.

In addition to the video of the men sexually abusing the monitor lizard, officials also found photos of various animals such as porcupines and deer on the mens’ phones.

Bengal monitor lizards can grow up to five and a half feet long and weigh almost 16 pounds. They are currently categorized as reserve species under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

Forest guards initially only caught one of the accused, while the others fled. The remaining three were later found in Hativ village in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. Officials said the men came to Kolhapur’s Chandoli village from Konkan to hunt.

The four hunters have been identified as Sandeep Tukram, Pawar Mangesh, Janardhan Kamtekar and Akshay Sunil.

The case was taken to the Indian Penal Court to discuss proper legal action and charges against the four men. According to the Indian Penal Code, Section 377 states that anyone who voluntarily commits intercourse with an animal “shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.”

If someone who isn't a part of your life anymore, but once was (decades ago) gets in touch to ask a favour, do you prefer it I'd they just ask outright, without even asking how you are/making conversation?

The sad thing in the situations which prompted me to bring this up, is that if we were in touch regularly and close, they'd know that their requests were futile.

One such person has just resorted to messages without even asking or using a greeting, just: "Please do such and such for me on this date." Another person - who we've lent money to before and done other favours for - recently asked out of the blue for $50K. We do not see either of these people socially or through work.

It puts us in a really awkward position being asked, as we are not in a position to help, and if they knew where our lives are at, they wouldn't ask.

These people are Gen Xers, BTW.

Is it now the norm/socially acceptable to ask anybody you know to do things for you? Sorry, in the case of the first person I'm thing of, just tell them to do something, but preface it with please, yet no hi, no thanks, do you mind, etc?

Watters is the product of a Quaker education. Born in Philadelphia, he attended William Penn Charter School, the oldest Quaker school in the world. The school emphasizes Quaker values — empathy for others and an appreciation for people from diverse racial, socioeconomic and religious backgrounds. Watters’ father and mother, Stephen and Anne, clearly believed in the school’s mission: They served as director of the middle school and director of lower school admissions, respectively.

When Watters was in high school, the family moved to Long Island, New York, where his father got a job as headmaster at The Green Vale School, an exclusive private school that runs through eighth grade, and his mother got a job as director of admissions. The Watters family lived on campus, but Watters was too old for Green Vale, so his parents sent him to nearby Friends Academy, another prestigious Quaker school attended by many Green Vale graduates.

Even before Watters’ first day at the school, there were signs he would follow a different path.

As part of the application process, Watters visited for something of a tryout, one of Watters’ former classmates recalled. “It was a school that a lot of people got rejected from,” said the classmate. “You kind of understood that if you were there for the day, you had to present yourself a certain way.”

But when class began on the day of his tryout, the gregarious Watters suddenly put his head down on his desk, the classmate said. It was a small class and a small room, and he was right in front of the teacher. But he didn’t appear to care, and it didn’t matter either. He got in.

“Obviously as the headmaster of Green Vale’s son, he was never going to be rejected,” said the classmate.

Watters repeated his junior year during his first year at Friends Academy, which Fox News explained was because of his family’s move from Philadelphia to Long Island. Once there, he immediately made his presence felt. He liked to debate the best way to wear the collar of a polo shirt, his friend Michael Shlofmitz said over email. Others said he would joke about his “hippie” parents, and people described him as friendly and charismatic. He played football and lacrosse. Parents generally liked him.

“He was surprisingly popular,” a second former classmate said.

But Watters was far from a star student, and he could occasionally display a shamelessness his peers found jarring. At one of his friend’s parties, Watters was told there was only one rule: Don’t go into Dad’s bedroom. He did anyway, and stuck chewing gum on the wall and left a burned hole in the carpet, according to two people who were there.

Instead, it allowed him to spend his final semester interning at a publishing company while still receiving his diploma on time.

Classmates wondered whether Watters’ father’s influence at The Green Vale School, which fed many students into Friends Academy each year, helped him and his friend avoid harsher punishment. “With his father being in that position of power, I don’t know if he ever had to deal with consequence,” the second classmate said.

The situation was part of a familiar pattern for Watters. “He was just one of those people,” said the third classmate, “that just sort of sailed through life.”

The new documentary makes it clear that the Barnetts knew exactly how old Natalia was, but continued to push the fiction that she was an adult for Kristine Barnett's personal reasons, which the show lays out.

It's as perversely fascinating as the first series, but so far it's a bit more satisfying because poor Natalia seems to have found some of the happiness she's sought all her life.

Maulik Pancholy’s appearance at Mountain View Middle School in Mechanicsburg was unanimously overturned by the district’s school board in an 8-0 vote.

Openly gay actor Maulik Pancholy was disinvited from speaking at a middle school anti-bullying assembly after concerns were raised about his political activism and what two school board members called his “lifestyle.”

Pancholy’s scheduled appearance at Mountain View Middle School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, was unanimously overturned by the district’s school board in a public meeting on April 15.

“If you research this individual, he labels himself as an activist, he is proud of his lifestyle and I don’t think that should be imposed upon our students at any age,” board member Bud Shaffner said at the meeting.

Trisha Comstock, a former parent at the school, started a Change.org petition to reinstate the empathy and anti-bullying assembly.

“What happened is homophobic. Anyone can go and watch the meeting,” Comstack tells TODAY.com. “This board is close to causing some real harm.”

Board member Kelly Potteiger raised concerns that Pancholy, 50, would discuss his children’s book “The Best at It,” which is about a gay Indian American boy.

“It’s not discriminating against his lifestyle — that’s his choice,” Potteiger said in the meeting. “But it’s him speaking about it.”

Pancholy’s presentation on anti-bullying at Mountain View Middle School was canceled by an 8-0 vote. TODAY.com has reached out to Pancholy for comment.

Brooke Ryerson, an LGBTQ high school sophomore, attended Mountain View Middle School. Ryerson and her mom plan to express their disappointment at the next board meeting on May 6.

“It was going to be an assembly about empathy and anti-bullying,” Ryerson, 16, tells TODAY.com. “But that doesn’t matter to the board. They want to silence us in any way they can.”

The “us” that Ryerson is referring to is the gay community.

“They’re sending that message that they don’t want our identities in the school,” Ryerson says. “I’m lucky that I have such accepting friends and family, but it’s gotta be devastating for the kids who don’t and now feel even more like they’re not wanted somewhere.”

How the school board decided

According to Pancholy’s website, the award-winning author delivers keynotes on the topic of “diversity and inclusion.” Pancholy is a self-described activist and served on President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Shaffner tells TODAY.com in a phone interview that he had concerns that Pancholy would “go off script” and talk about politics.

“Politically motivated discussions belong at home and not in the classroom,” Shaffner says. “A number of board members went to his website and what stuck out to all of us is that he’s a political activist.”

Who thought this was a good idea?

While there are 90 or so more expensive apartments for sale in Chicago, this one takes the prize for me.

At 7900 square feet, No. 13 at 1325 N. Astor has 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, and 12 principal rooms. There are three good terraces on the lower level, and lots of David Adler classic touches: circular foyers, choice marble and wood parquet floors, apse-ended rooms, arcades, colonnades, antique-style raised panel molding, and an interesting, well-conceived floor plan. It even has (for once) a great kitchen with a huge semi-circular arc of glazed pantry cupboards.

It is more likely a disadvantge for others, but I like that its position two blocks from the lake means that it has views of the lake at a distance and (for me) a more interesting and embracing skyline view of other tall buildings framing city and lake views beyond.

If the price (reduced by a half-million) seems reasonable enough, certainly considering the square footage, the monthly HOA fees are close to $10,000 and figure a further $4200/month for property taxes.

For millennials and older, the “You Got Mail” notification rarely incited stress.

In fact, most folks over thirty can still remember feeling a flush of excitement upon receiving an email — be it from work, family, friends or even advertisers — during its early stages in the early aughts.

But to the digital natives of Generation Z, getting electronic correspondence, namely from the office, is apparently as anxiety-inducing as getting sentenced to the electric chair.

Babbel researchers recently conducted a survey of 2,000 U.S. office workers to determine that employees between the ages of 18 to 24 are the most likely to let emails pile up.

The findings indicated that more than a third, 36%, of Gen Z professionals say they have over 1,000 unread emails in their inbox, compared with 18% of office workers overall.

For youngsters on the job, the accumulation of unanswered missives creates a hefty layer of pressure to open, read and properly respond to the messages. And once they finally reply, a whopping 1 in 5 Gen Zs report “very often” regretting the emails they send.

The formality of emailing, compared to the laissez-faire nature of texting or social media direct messaging, too, makes twenty-somethings feel uncomfortable.

“Gen Z’s communication preferences are heavily influenced by the prevalence of instant messaging platforms and social media,” said Touma. “Platforms like Snapchat and Instagram, for example, prioritize instantaneous communication, informality and visual cues.”

“The structured and formal nature of email communication may feel unfamiliar and more complicated to many [Gen Zers],” the insider added.

And he’s right — the kids are not alright.

Rewatched “Invaders from Mars” last night — the first rewatch since the early 80s and the advent of home video, when I had rented it from New Video in the Village. (Anyone remember New Video?)

It was the first major sci fi film shot in color, released before War of the Worlds (there was a major race between the two productions).

The picture holds up pretty well as a boy in danger narrative in the first half, but ebbs a bit as the military gets involved and becomes a by the numbers action pic (with some 50s “are they subversives?” paranoia thrown in for good measure).

Jimmy Hunt and Helena (not Bonham) Carter are great in the picture. It was Carter’s first role as anything other than the lead’s smart girlfriend, the role she’s best known for, and her last picture. Carter is ravishing in her white shunt and stylish heels — wardrobe by “Norma” — but the look is tarnished a bit by her absurdly large decorative pocket kerchief. The set designs are gorgeous, and the approach to the invasion landing site — a fenced path leading to some sand dunes — is iconic in 50s horror.

Of course some things are dated and unintentionally hilarious. The aliens are a complete hoot — the lead looks like the great gazoo trapped in a goldfish bowl, and his mooks are big guys in furry green suits endlessly galumphing along corridors in the set. And because “the military is called in,” this being the 50s, endless stock footage of US tank destroyers is shown, both M10s and White M3 75mm Gun Motor Carriages. As these blaze away, the aliens ask Carter, “what are they doing up there?” — and I can’t help but wonder that myself, because the alien spaceship has burrowed deep underground.

The American film’s original ending has a fascinating “it was all a dream, but the dream is becoming a reality” twist. When released in the UK, the British distributor hated that, and reshoots were done with a simple and satisfying happy end conclusion.

Scotland's devolved lawmakers are set to confirm Humza Yousaf as the new first minister on Tuesday, after he narrowly won the contest to succeed Nicola Sturgeon as Scottish National Party (SNP) leader.

Yousaf beat out two SNP rivals Monday to clinch the party's top job, vowing to rejuvenate its signature policy of pursuing independence for Scotland which has stalled in recent months.

The 37-year-old will be the youngest first minister since devolution created the Scottish parliament in 1999, and the first leader of a national UK party from a minority ethnic background.

"We should all take pride in the fact that today we have sent a clear message that your colour of skin, or your faith, is not a barrier to leading the country we all call home," Yousaf said after winning the SNP leadership race.

Promising to be a leader "for all of Scotland", he pledged to "kickstart" a civic movement that would "ensure our drive for independence is in fifth gear".

"We will be the generation that delivers independence for Scotland," he declared in his victory speech.

Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) will vote to confirm a new first minister at lunchtime, with Yousaf ensured of succeeding Sturgeon given the SNP is the largest party.

He will then be sworn in at a ceremony Wednesday.

The seismic shift in Scottish politics follows Sturgeon's surprise resignation announcement last month after more than eight years at the helm.

The 52-year-old said she was quitting because she felt unable to give "every ounce of energy" to the job.

But it followed a difficult period for her government, during which support for independence has slipped.

Recent surveys show around 45 percent of Scots support Scotland leaving the United Kingdom -- the same tally recorded in a 2014 referendum which London insists settles the matter for a generation.

Yousaf said Monday he would continue Sturgeon's policy of pushing the Conservative government there to allow another vote.

That was immediately rebuked in London, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's spokesman telling reporters that the new SNP leader should focus on economic and policy issues "that matter" to Scottish voters.

"That's what the (UK) government will be focused on," the spokesman noted.

Yousaf, who was health minister in Sturgeon's last cabinet, narrowly topped the SNP contest with 52 percent of members' preferentially ranked votes.

During campaigning, he argued the party needs to create a better vision for an independent Scotland.

Despite ultimately emerging victorious, he attracted criticism over his record in several roles in government.

He now faces a bigger challenge to win over the wider Scottish electorate, with a UK general election expected within the next 18 months.

According to Ipsos polling, Yousaf enjoys a favourable opinion among just 22 percent of voters.

Despite winning a succession of elections under Sturgeon, the SNP could also be in need of a boost following the divisive three-way leadership battle.

Sturgeon's last months in power were also overshadowed by the backlash to a new law allowing anyone over 16 to change their gender without a medical diagnosis.

The law would have allowed a transgender woman who was convicted of rape before she began transitioning to serve a prison sentence in a women-only facility.

As debate raged, the UK government used an unprecedented veto to block the legislation.

The UK Supreme Court last year also ruled that Sturgeon's government could not hold a new referendum on sovereignty without London's approval.

The twin setbacks prompted rare criticism of Sturgeon's leadership and tactics.

There was a point midway into the movie where I thought to myself, “this movie is fucking awesome”, and it is, for the most part.

The writing is strong and “tightly knitted”, as I like to call it. There aren’t tons of subplots etc like can happen with movies like this. There is one focus and the film remains focused on that from start to end, and that is these 3 character’s relationship.

Zendaya is a fucking force. I think she’s talented but she surprised me in this. She is manipulative and a boss bitch and bodyslams the role. Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor are both amazing as Art and Patrick, and their chemistry is off the charts. I personally LOVED Josh as Patrick. He was soooo good as the no-good asshole who women still feel drawn to, but he’s the guy you fuck, not marry. Art is the opposite. Very boring for Tashi and her lapdog, as opposed to Patrick who she gets into arguments with and goes head to head with her, which seems to turn her on. The score is brilliant. It’s a character of its own in this film.

The film is fun and energetic. There is so much energy you can feel it.

There is a scene where we finally meet Tashi in the past (the first time the boys see her play in person) that got me excited. When she walks out music starts bumping and it’s pure energy. Zendaya looked so beautiful in this. There are a few salacious scenes and some people in the theater reacted. You could hear “omg Zendaya!” like people were genuinely shocked to see her straddling a man. It was funny but makes sense as she has such a clean image and always plays teens.

There are two moments I disliked, one being the way the film ended. Just no. And two, the scene with Tashi and Patrick in the wind storm. I thought the scene was cool until it went all weird. But besides that, amazing.

There are a lot of homoerotic undertones in this from early in the film and I don’t see many straight men liking this unless with their girlfriends or cinephiles. That’s one of the things I liked about the film too. You could feel that atmosphere without actually seeing anything like that happen. It was interesting.

Honestly, I would give it a 4/5. It’s awesome but that ending was a no for me and it started to become too stylistic toward the end.

I just watched lame rom-com “Anybody But You” primarily to see Glen Powell. This man is so damn hot! There’s something about him - not only his incredible body and his gorgeous face, but his charm, the way he carries himself, his expressions - totally compelling. And yes, I know he’s straight.

It's baking in the oven now. This is the third time I've made this fabulous recipe. It's a real project. It took me 58 minutes to prepare the ingredients before I could put it in the oven to bake and this is after I made the marinara sauce from scratch yesterday and roasted the eggplant slices yesterday as well. One of the fraus under the recipe said to double all of the cheeses and the marinara sauce which I've done. I still used up ALL of them making this.

It's a lot of work but the effort has been worth the outcome.

Eleftherios Petrounias, the celebrated Greek gymnastics athlete once again proved his dominance in the still rings event on Friday evening by winning a gold medal in the 2024 European Championships in Artistic Gymnastics that was held in Rimini, Italy. This was the 7th European Championship gold medal for Petrounias.

The movie was inspired by the real life story of friends of director Herbert Ross and his ex-ballerina wife Nora Kaye. Director Herbert Ross said: "Grace loved the story, and said she'd come out of retirement to play the ballet dancer who opts for marriage. Then Grace showed the script to Prince Rainier and he told her he didn't want her to go back to work."

In one scene, Anne Bancroft throws a drink in Shirley MacLaine's face. The moment was scrupulously rehearsed by director Herbert Ross, up to the point where Bancroft throws the drink into MacLaine's face. During rehearsal he had the actress set the glass down on the counter without tossing its contents every time; then continuing with the scene. When everything was ready, Ross took the shot in one take -- the scene you see on film, where Bancroft throws the drink into MacLaine's face. Having only been hit the one time, the look of shock on MacLaine's face is real.

Is anyone watching this? It’s extremely well done. These events happened when I was a child, but it’s all coming back.

The UK has long had to deal with refugees (mostly young men) travelling across mainland Europe and getting to the UK as stowaways or on small boats crossing the channel.

Now the UK is moving ahead with the controversial Rwanda deportation plan the Irish government are getting very angsty about refugees (mostly young men) crossing the border from Northern Ireland into Ireland.

Ireland is already under pressure about immigration after some high profile murders and the subsequent riots in Dublin in November last year.

I just recently re-read "Treasure Island," and enjoyed it so much I'm watching "Black Sails," which I missed when it was first out because it was on Starz (and so hard to access) and because I did not like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I have such mixed feelings about it. There seems to be a secret gym and shower and laundromat hidden in the pirate ship because most of the pirates are so well built and have clean hair and clean clothing, so that seems weird. And the lead woman who plays the pirates' fence looks like Keira Knightley and wears 21st-c. make-up. But the stories are pretty harrowing, and the sets are incredible. There's lots of eye candy, too (thanks to the well built actors playing sailors), especially the guy who plays Long John Silver. The lead is Toby Stephens and he's terrific.

Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics recently released its Spring 2024 poll of young voters 18 to 29 years old and offered some surprising findings regarding the 2024 election and how young people view the Israel-Hamas conflict.Of the 16 issues polled, “Israel/Palestine” ranked as the 15th most important compared to the others – only viewed as more important than student debt.

Inflation, Healthcare, Housing, Gun Violence, and Jobs ranked as the top five most important issues – in that order. “The only issue time that inflation did not win its individual match-up was when it was paired with women’s reproductive rights. Women’s reproductive rights was considered the more important issue, 57% to 43%,” noted the poll.

In terms of how Israel has prosecuted its war against Hamas, a plurality was unsure whether or not Israel had “gone too far.”

“When young Americans are asked whether or not they believe Israel’s response so far to the October 7 attack by Hamas has been justified, a plurality indicates that they don’t know (45%). About a fifth (21%) report that Israel’s response was justified with 32% believing it was not justified.

The poll found that Biden’s approval rating among young voters was at 31 percent overall. On the Israel-Hamas conflict, Biden landed at a dismal 18 percent approval and at 30 percent on the economy in general. Biden still leads Trump by 8 points among all young Americans and 19 points among those who are likely voters, which is down from 30 points at the same time in 2020.

The decipherment of an ancient scroll has revealed where the Greek philosopher Plato is buried, Italian researchers suggest.

Graziano Ranocchia, a philosopher at the University of Pisa, and colleagues used artificial intelligence (AI) to decipher text preserved on charred pieces of papyrus recovered in Herculaneum, an ancient Roman town located near Pompeii, according to a translated statement from Italy's National Research Council.

Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was destroyed in A.D. 79 when Mount Vesuvius erupted, cloaking the region in ash and pyroclastic flows.

One of the scrolls carbonized by the eruption includes the writings of Philodemus of Gadara (lived circa 110 to 30 B.C.), an Epicurean philosopher who studied in Athens and later lived in Italy. This text, known as the "History of the Academy," details the academy that Plato founded in the fourth century B.C. and gives details about Plato's life, including his burial place.

Historians already knew that Plato, the famous student of Socrates who wrote down his teacher's philosophies as well as his own, was buried at the Academy, which the Roman general Sulla destroyed in 86 B.C. But researchers weren't sure exactly where on the school's grounds that Plato, who died in Athens in 348 or 347 B.C., had been laid to rest.

However, with advances in technology, researchers were able to employ a variety of cutting-edge techniques including infrared and ultraviolet optical imaging, thermal imaging and tomography to read the ancient papyrus, which is now part of the collection at the National Library of Naples.

So far, researchers have identified 1,000 words, or roughly 30% of the text written by Philodemus.

"Among the most important news, we read that Plato was buried in the garden reserved for him (a private area intended for the Platonic school) of the Academy in Athens, near the so-called Museion or sacellum sacred to the Muses," researchers wrote in the statement. "Until now it was only known that he was buried generically in the Academy."

The text also detailed how Plato was "sold into slavery" sometime between 404 and 399 B.C. (It was previously thought that this occurred in 387 B.C.)

Another part of the translated text describes a dialogue between characters, in which Plato shows disdain for the musical and rhythmic abilities of a barbarian musician from Thrace, according to the statement.

This isn't the first time that researchers have used AI to read ancient scrolls that survived Mount Vesuvius's eruption. Earlier this year, researchers deciphered a different scroll that was charred during the volcanic eruption at a nearby villa that once belonged to Julius Caesar's father-in-law.

I found out a week ago that I have to move, I mentioned it in another thread. I have lived here 18 years and have until the end of July to find an apartment in a town with less than 1 percent availability rate. I knew my rent would go up by at least 50 percent.

Keith Olbermann offered ESPN an ultimatum: silence Stephen A. Smith or fire him.

Olbermann uploaded a video detailing his orders Monday, including a meandering 393-word caption. In short, he called upon ESPN to take immediate action after Smith appeared on Fox News last week.

"WHY ESPN MUST EITHER SILENCE OR FIRE STEPHEN A. SMITH: Its longstanding policy - no, you can't be a sportscaster on one station and an advocate for a presidential candidate on another station - is right. I know: I helped to author it because the day when you (or I) could straddle both worlds is long gone," started Olbermann.

For background, Sean Hannity asked Smith about polls demonstrating the growing support for Trump among black voters. Smith attributed the trend to black Americans relating to how the law has been weaponized against the former president.

"By Donald Trump’s statement weeks ago, talking about how he’s hearing that black folks find him relatable, because what he’s going through is similar to what black Americans have gone through. He wasn’t lying," Smith told Sean Hannity.

"He was telling the truth. When you see the law enforcement, the court system, and everything else being exercised against him, it is something that black folks, throughout this nation, can relate to."

You are likely wondering at what point during the segment Smith "endorsed," as Olbermann stated, Donald Trump. Here's the catch: he never did.

In fact, Smith is open about neither supporting Trump nor planning to vote for him.

He simply answered the question Hannity posed with analysis supported by polling. Anyway, Olbermann wants him fired for that.

Secondly, ESPN allows Smith to discuss politics on Fox News (and other cable news networks, like CNN) because he negotiated a clause in his contract that allows him to operate a political/cultural podcast outside of ESPN. In doing so, Smith bypasses ESPN's standard booking restrictions.

Olbermann didn't have that clause in his contract during his several stints at ESPN. Most commentators don't. Stephen A. Smith does because he has leverage over ESPN, as the biggest drawing card at the company.

Notice below the logo behind Smith during his appearance on Fox News. Notice how the chyron reads "Host of the Stephen A. Smith Show" and not "ESPN Host."

Thirdly, Olbermann promises that he'd insist on the same ultimatum if Smith "were campaigning for Biden." Hmm.

So how come Olbermann didn't call for Stephen A's job when he appeared on Chris Cuomo's NewsNation program last month and criticized Trump?

Likewise, Olbermann had little to say when ESPN contributor Pablo Torre mocked then-Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy on MSNBC late last year.

KO only screeches about ESPN's tolerance for political discourse when it involves Sage Steele (a moderate conservative) or Smith (who, occasionally, departs from the pre-approved liberal orthodoxy).

Lastly, there was a time when Olbermann could inflict real damage on one's career.

I watched an old tv series yesterday where a professional character rented a one-bedroom, second-floor apartment in a fairly decent area of Washington DC (unspecified) for $500 a month. More than 20 "sexual predators" have been given jail sentences of up to 30 years for sexually exploiting girls in West Yorkshire.

The abuse, which included rape and trafficking offences, was described by police as "abhorrent in the extreme".

The prosecutions took place after officers investigated the sexual abuse of eight girls in the north Kirklees area between 1999 and 2012.

Police said the operation was centred around Batley and Dewsbury.

Reporting restrictions covering a series of trials held over two years were lifted on Friday, following the latest sentencing of seven men at Leeds Crown Court.

Four of the men convicted in the series of trials received sentences of more than 20 years in prison.

West Yorkshire Police said juries had heard details of "absolutely shocking offending", with victims treated as "defenceless commodities to be abused and traded at whim".

My first reaction was how much money was spent on focus groups determining the seating arrangement. Alicia Menedez gets the center seat and center shot? I mean Michael Steele was a Governor and he is the former Chair of the RNC. Shouldn't he have gotten that seat? Or would that look too much like pimp-daddy Michael Steel and his girls?

A Bollywood throwback is resurfacing on social media this week as thousands of TikTok users participate in the viral “Asoka” makeup trend.

The trend takes inspiration from a 2001 Hindi film of the same name, and it has creators styling themselves in Indian bridal hair, makeup and outfits to the beat of one of the movie’s songs. Creators of several cultural backgrounds are partaking, many amassing tens of millions of views and likes.

“Asoka,” which stars Bollywood heavy hitters Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, tells a fictionalized story based on the ancient Mauryan emperor Ashoka the Great, who ruled in the Indian subcontinent during the third century B.C.E.

The movie showcases what are meant to be ancient Indian styles of dress and makeup, including dark eyeliner and geometric patterns drawn on the face and body. Though modern Indian bridal wear isn’t used in the movie, the bright colors, bold eyes, dramatic makeup and gold jewelry have become the main pull of the Asoka trend.

On TikTok, creators use transitions to document styling their look, getting ready to the beat of “Asoka” song “San Sanana.”

Someone mentioned this film in the recent thread about lesser-known horror movies from the '70s and '80s, and I think it is worthy of its own discussion. Starring John Vernon, Samantha Eggar, and Lynne Griffin, it focuses on a group of aspiring actresses who go to audition for the title role of "Audra" in a film about a mentally ill woman, held at the sleazy director's mansion during a snowstorm. Vernon uses the opportunity to fuck his nubile would-be starlets, while Eggar, who has been coaxed into method-rehearsing the material in an insane asylum (feigning insanity) crashes the party, as does a hag-masked maniac with a sickle.

The film was shot by two different directors and had a protracted, messy production that spanned three years. Because of this, it often feels very loosely tethered together, but the atmosphere is borderline surreal and there are some great set pieces and standout murder sequences that I think elevate it to the ranks of a superior slasher. Its unforgettable ice skating sequence is infamous, and the downbeat finale between Eggar and Griffin is fantastic. Let's discuss this underrated Canuck horror film.

My go-to is the bloated, barely conscious, Britney Spears at the 2007 VMA Awards. So many things wrong here: The exposed hair extensions, the ill-fitting bra and panties, the obvious lip-syncing(as usual), stiff dancing, and the stone faced celebrities in the audience. Still her most talked-about performance, but not in a good way.

Roast me if you must but this missed the mark in every way for me.

Zero character development (we were presumed to have known who these ladies were and the power they had). If I didn’t watch Real Housewives, Lee Radziwell would be a complete mystery to me. And the rest of them, outside of Babe and Truman are outside of my scope entirely.

That set work was appalling.

No cohesiveness to the entire series in terms of story lines - I mean…why no background on Bill sleeping with literally everyone but I guess that goes back to my first point.

I expected more from the fashions. My Grandma dressed better than that to go to the grocery store.

I want a redo from the perspective of the women - one that I can actually watch all episodes of…

I noped out on this around E4 because it was a total snooze fest. I guarantee the real stories were 1000x more salacious than what we were given.

In general, I think Ryan Murphy has lost the superpower he once had. Nip/Tuck is unmatched in watch-abilty as an example.

S1 could have been incredible but was marred by overacting and over- directing and lack of character development. You can’t just assume everyone is going to know the backstory on these characters and without the backstory the feud doesn’t matter.

With lot of glass to clean on 50 acres of hilltop, so there's views; a hanger for your plane and a garage big enough for a car collection AND the only private FAA-approved landing strip in the entire state. I know they probably have to leave some of the lawn clear, but the landscaping is particularly uninspired. Three million ask and the taxes are only $25k? In Connecticut?

The angles in the kitchen photos made me dizzy, the (Chinese red or is that a burnt something?) color in the dining room doesn't flatter the diners and the kitchen pass-through's a bit more informal than I'd like, plus a lot of the decor has a kind of uninspired Bob's Furniture vibe to it. You could fix that: Eames Lounge Chairs instead of the "Stressless" numbers shown for starters. I dunno, though: 30 minutes to NYC or Boston by plane. You could live like a super hero (or villain) in your hilltop lair.

Jim Stryker was discovered by photographer Walter Kundzicz and was one of the very first “Beefcake” models.

Stryker was fresh out of high school when he met photographer Walter Kundzicz (a.k.a. Champion) in the summer of 1952. In search of new subjects for a growing portfolio of young male models, Champ traveled specifically to a rural swimming hole to meet the beautiful blonde youth. Upon arrival, he was greeted with the breathtaking sight of a fully naked 18-year-old in a tree, laughing uproariously as he urinated on a friend standing below.

Jim and Champ hit it off at once and the photographer proceeded with the first of 21 separate photo sessions with the boy. These photographs quickly turned him into the first (and still most enduringly popular) gay icons of all time.

Kundzicz’s first catalog was dedicated only to Jim Stryker, who turned out to be his best-selling model for over seven years. These works were captured on Fire Island and remain some of the most searched to this day.

Champion’s magazines of Stryker were every gay boy’s fantasy. In a time where sexuality was repressed in the mainstream, Fire Island came to represent a place of mystery and a gay haven for many. While much about Jim Stryker remains unknown, his blonde beauty against the liberated setting of Fire Island remains a snapshot in time of a refuge for young gay boys of the time.

The original production had more than 1,000 performances. It made stars out of Michael Jeter and Jane Krakowski.

It requires a big cast, but the set can be done as it was in the original fairly cheaply.

Paula Vogel’s Mother Play: A Play in Five Evictions has opened at the Helen Hayes Theatre on Broadway in a Second Stage Theatre production directed by Tina Landau. It stars Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons, and Celia Keenan-Bolger, and has received a slew of raves - especially for Lange. I will be in New York from June 14th - 20th and have a ticket to see its last scheduled performance at its matinee on June 16th, the afternoon of the Tony Awards. I have been lucky to have seen Lange in all her previous Broadway appearances in three of the greatest female roles in the American theatre canon: Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire, Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, and Mary Tyrone in Long Days Journey into Night. She was magnificent in all of them, but this is the first time she has been able to create a role in a play.

Movie stars, whose faces find the light that longs to find the facial planes that make each, illumined, less plain, know also how to stay incongruously simple so that little snippets of simplicity can then be enlarged, arranged; screen performances are segmental until edited together into a whole after actors have finished doing their jobs. The performances that ultimately result are both static yet, if all the ingredients artistically coalesce, ever stirring having been technologically stirred together. Few movie stars and great screen actors (not always the same) can translate that transitory weigh-station scene-by-scene beat-by-beat mode of recorded acting onto the rigorous evanescence of the stage. Not Lange. She’s a stage creature. She knows not only how to embody a character but also how to live within her own body on a theatre stage and sustain an arc of a characterization without a director calling, “Cut.” She rhythmically rearranges her artistry from beat-to-beat to a symphonic whole.

I wrote a cover story on Lange for Vanity Fair thirty years ago - 29 to be precise, precision also a hallmark of Lange’s artistry - that conflated with her winning her Oscar for Best Actress for Blue Sky directed by Tony Richardson. Our paths have crossed often over the years. I am friendly with her daughter Hannah who was an upstate New York neighbor of mine when I lived up there for five years and whom Jessica often visits. We shared a mutual friend in the late writer and raconteur Julia Reed, each bonding over their singularity and fascination with the south . Julia, like me, was from Mississippi and Lange, a stunningly talented photographer, published a book of photographs of the state she took on the many road trips that she and Julia would take up into Mississippi. I hung with Jessica in Julia’s book-lined place in New Orleans’s Garden District one memorable night. Another mutual friend recently directed her in an upcoming film in which she, in fact, plays a stage creature. He and I were talking about her in London a few months ago - he claims she is giving an astonishing performance in the film, even for her - and I shared an anecdote about how I ended up in the back of a limo with her Oscar between my legs that night she won it almost 30 years ago, which coincided with my birthday, and I tried to explain to him (and to me) why it might have been the saddest moment of my life. “You and Jessica have something in common,” he told me. “Neither of you can let go of your loneliness.”

Well, it's tomorrow, but I'm getting a head start.

Kent Franklin McWhirter on September 26, 1942 in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in the San Gabriel Valley town of Baldwin Park, California. A child of hard-working parents, Kent learned responsibility at an early age. He was handling his first horse, Toby, at the age of eight. At ten he began working at his father’s Richfield gas station that was located near what is now the intersection of the 10 and 605 freeways. In 1954 Kent got a job at Brackett Field Airport in La Verne, California with the help of a family friend. Unable to be legally paid at twelve years old, he instead was given flying lessons in exchange for his work. For the next five years Kent worked weekends and summers at the airport.

Kent starred on the football team at Baldwin Park High School. After graduation, he attended Citrus Junior College and then accepted a football scholarship to the University of Utah in 1962. It was during this time that perhaps the two most important events in Kent’s young life occurred.

In February of 1961, a friend asked Kent if he would like to participate in a touch football game. This was no ordinary game, as Kent would be playing on a team captained by Ricky Nelson, and none other than Elvis Presley would lead the opposing squad. As a result of this game, Kent began a friendship with Ricky Nelson that quickly led to his first acting job on the immensely popular series The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. At first a background player, Kent soon became a regular on the show, and would appear on 44 episodes. Kent began to take acting much more seriously, and finally made the decision to pursue a career as an actor. During this time he worked on a mulitude of films and television shows doing bits, background and stunts.

The next big moment in Kent’s life took place on July 14, 1962. This was the day that he married his high school sweetheart, Cynthia Lee Doty.

While working on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Kent was asked to screen test at Universal Studios for a long term contract. While waiting for the studio to sign him, he continued working on other shows including several of Elvis Presley’s films, Viva Las Vegas, Girl Happy, Kissin’ Cousins, and Roustabout.

Finally, in November of 1965, Universal put Kent under contract and immediately sent him to work. He appeared in shows such as McHale’s Navy and The Virginian. Kent also tallied several appearances on Jack Webb’s Dragnet. It was his appearances on Dragnet that led Bob Cinader and Jack Webb, the producers, to cast Kent as one the stars in their brand new series: Adam-12. This would be his huge break and make him a star. With partner Martin Milner, Kent helped propel Adam-12 to the top of the ratings and into television history.

A worldwide phenomenon, Adam-12 aired from 1968-1975, a span of 174 episodes

Appearing on a top rated television show offered Kent many tremendous opportunities. Among his favorites was being a guest at the Indianapolis 500 and being trackside for the race itself. A lifelong racing fan, this was a special moment for Kent and led to his continued involvement in the sport. He has competed as a driver in automobile races such as the annual Toyota Pro Celebrity Challenge in Long Beach, California, and Watkins Glen, New York. He has also competed in several professional racing series in the Sports Car Club of America and IMSA, in such events as the 12 Hours of Sebring.

After Adam-12, Kent starred with Barry Van Dyke in the ABC series Galactica 1980, and in the 1989 NBC series UNSUB. He has recently appeared in recurring roles in the NBC series Seaquest DSV, and the USA Networks Renegade, Silk Stalkings, and Pacific Blue, as well asthe SCI-FI Channels Farscape and the hit CBS series Jag.

Aniston and her Echo Films partner Kristin Hahn are producing a “9 to 5” reimagining for 20th Century Studios, Variety has confirmed.

The film is currently in development, with Diablo Cody (“Juno,” “Lisa Frankenstein”) working on the latest draft of the “9 to 5” reimagining. Plot details are being kept under wraps.

The original “9 to 5” follows three female office colleagues who decide to exact revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss. Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton and Dabney Coleman starred in the 1980 office satire, directed by Colin Higgins and written by Patricia Resnick. The hit comedy film spawned a sitcom of the same name, which aired on ABC from 1982 to 1983, and in first-run syndication from 1986 to 1988. Parton, Tomlin and Fonda participated in the 2022 documentary “Still Working 9 to 5,” which focuses on the impact of the classic film 40 years later.
